Jammu, Sep 26: The Jammu & Kashmir government has expelled a councillor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on the grounds of abusing her official powers and “accepting” a bribe.
Jyoti Devi, a JMC councillor, was caught red-handed by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while “accepting” Rs 1,000 as a bribe a few months back.
“Her husband had been demanding money from the contractor for giving clearance to the works done by him (contractor) with the signatures of the corporator,” Deputy Mayor JMC, Baldev Billowria told Rising Kashmir.
He said Jyoti Devi was the corporator of ward number 53 from the posh locality of Trikuta Nagar Jammu.
The Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) has ordered the removal of Jyoti Devi.
“Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 34(I) (b) of The Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, the government hereby removes Jyoti Yadav, councillor, ward No 53, from her office on the ground of abuse of her official powers, with immediate effect,” reads an order issued by the H&UDD.
Earlier, the government had removed the president Municipal Committee Awantipora Bashir Ahmad Bhat for abusing official powers.
