Jammu & Kashmir witnessed a moment of immense pride as Jahangir Ahmad, a specially-abled student of VMS Shafqat Special School, became the first athlete from the region to win Silver and Bronze medals in Snowshoeing (50M – M4) at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025 in Italy.
To celebrate this historic achievement, a grand felicitation ceremony was organized at Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS), Bemina, Srinagar.
The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Mir Mohammad Maqbool, President and Founder of VMS, who felicitated Jahangir in the presence of Mr. Javid Ahmad (J&K Sports Council Department), Er. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik (Director, VMS), Dr. Bashir Ahmad Lone, Mohammad Ayoub (Administrator, VMS), as well as Jahangir’s parents and other dignitaries.

His achievement was widely lauded by students, parents, media personnel, and officials present at the event. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Mir Mohammad Maqbool expressed his gratitude to the J&K Sports Council, the staff of Shafqat Special School, and all those who contributed to Jahangir’s journey. Er. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik commended Jahangir’s dedication, while Mohammad Ayoub acknowledged the contributions of Mr. Ubiad, a volunteer from Special Olympics Bharat Kashmir, for his invaluable support.
Additionally, Mr. Raza presented a PPT showcasing Jahangir’s achievements, and Mr. Javid Ahmad (J&K Sports Council) congratulated him while praising VMS for its continued efforts in empowering individuals with disabilities (Divyangjan).
Jahangir’s parents shared their heartfelt thoughts on his inspiring journey and expressed their gratitude to everyone who played a role in his success.
As a mark of honor, Jahangir was felicitated with a traditional Kashmiri shawl and a memento by Prof. (Dr.) Mir Mohammad Maqbool, Er. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, and Mr. Javid Ahmad of the J&K Sports Council.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Bashir Ahmad Lone, acknowledging the contributions of all individuals and organizations, especially Mrs. Malika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, and the J&K Sports Council, for their unwavering support in Jahangir’s journey.
