Srinagar, Aug 14: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) leader and Constituency Incharge Pattan, Hamid Rather, has been awarded the prestigious Millennium Development Fellowship by the United Nations for 2024.
This fellowship, which recognises the emerging leaders committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was awarded following an intensely competitive selection process.
Over 52,000 applicants from more than 6,000 campuses across the globe vied for the fellowship, with only 5%—representing 280+ campuses—being selected to host the 4,000+ Millennium Fellows this year, the party said in a press release.
The party said the recognition marks a proud moment for both Hamid Rather and the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, as well as his home constituency of Pattan. “Rather’s achievement underscores his dedication to public service and his commitment to fostering positive change both within his community and on a global scale,” the statement said.
Expressing gratitude, Rather highlighted the vital support of his family and mentors in reaching this milestone. He said, “I am deeply thankful to my parents, who are my lifeline and constant source of strength,” he shared. He also extended special thanks to JKAP President Altaf Bukhari, Senior Vice-President Ghulam Hassan Mir, General Secretary Mohammad Rafi Mir, President Kashmir Province Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Senior Vice-President Dilawar Mir, Yawar Mir, Muntazir Mohiuddin, and others within the party for their unwavering support.”
Hamid expressed appreciation for the academic mentoring he received, particularly from Yasin Sir, a law professor at the University of Kashmir, who provided a crucial recommendation letter. He also acknowledged the guidance of Mohammad Hussain Sir, Dean & HoD of the School of Law, along with other faculty members who have been instrumental in his academic and professional journey.
The Millennium Development Fellowship offers participants access to world-class training, resources, and a global network of peers, empowering them to spearhead initiatives that drive social change and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.
Rather’s impressive academic credentials include triple master’s degrees in Convergent Journalism, Public Administration, and Urdu Literature. He has also qualified for the National Eligibility Test (NET) in Public Administration and is currently pursuing an LLB (Honours) at the University of Kashmir.
Professionally, Rather serves as a public policy and communication specialist for organizations in India and Germany, further solidifying his role as a leader committed to making a meaningful impact on society.
This prestigious fellowship not only honours Rather’s past achievements but also positions him as a beacon of inspiration for the younger generation, demonstrating the power of dedication, support, and leadership on the global stage, the party said.
