Srinagar, May 03: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have introduced an innovative AI-Based Facial Recognition System atNavyuga Tunnel, Banihal in Ramban, officials on Friday said.

SSP RambanAnuj Kumar said in a significant stride towards bolstering security measures, District Police Ramban made functional an advanced AI-Based Facial Recognition System at Navyuga Checking Plaza Banihal.

“It falls under the jurisdiction of Police Post Jawahar Tunnel Police Station Banihal.”

SSP Kumar said that this technology is designed to identify and track individuals involved in criminal activities, including terrorists, OGWs, absconders, history sheeters, thieves, and drug peddlers.

“The system’s implementation marks a pivotal step in the region’s commitment to ensuring public safety and combating crime effectively,” he said.

SSP Ramban further said that the significance of the AI-based facial recognition system in swiftly detecting and apprehending individuals with a criminal record.

“The technology’s ability to identify a range of threats, from terrorism to local crime, is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining law and order within the community,” he said

The AI-Based Facial Recognition System is an integral part of smart policing initiatives. By leveraging this advanced technology, law enforcement agencies aim to not only track down criminals more effectively but also contribute to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing.

He said this move aligns with the commitment to employing innovative solutions for ensuring public safety and upholding the principles of smart, technology-driven law enforcement.

The SSP Ramban said this strategic initiative aims to revolutionize the policing landscape by leveraging advanced technology for more efficient crime detection and public safety.

“After recognizing the accused person, there will be an alarm in the computer, and then the same person can be arrested or detained. Even if the person is wearing a face mask, the system can easily identify them,” he said.

SSP Kumar further announced plans to replicate these AI-based systems in other parts of the district.

He also mentioned that photographs of active terrorists will be loaded into the system to thwart any potential major terror incidents in the district. The system provides a comprehensive background with full details of crimes and other relevant information, SSP said.

The police officer said this initiative aligns with the broader vision of smart policing and stated that the AI-Based Facial Recognition System is an integral component of modern law enforcement practices.

“By harnessing this advanced technology, law enforcement agencies aim not only to track down criminals more effectively but also to contribute to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing,” he said.

Earlier in December 2023, Police introduced first innovative AI-Based Facial Recognition System in Kishtwar at Morden Naka Drabshalla of the district.
