J&K’s drug war gains momentum

Srinagar, May 09: The Jammu and Kashmir Administration has achieved significant progress under the ongoing 100-day "Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan", registering 614 FIRs, arresting 646 persons, and attaching immovable properties worth approximately Rs 25.97 crore, while conducting over 2.16 lakh awareness events involving more than one crore participants, according to official data.

The campaign has witnessed unprecedented success from its launch on April 11 till May 09 (Saturday), with significant public participation and institutional coordination involving departments of Health, Social Welfare, Information, Police, Education, and other allied agencies.

A total of 2,16,123 awareness events have been conducted across Jammu and Kashmir, including mega Padyatras, school and college programmes, village-level campaigns, youth engagement activities, seminars, rallies, sports and cultural events, and community interactions aimed at sensitising the public about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

The Tele-MANAS counselling initiative received 2,786 calls, indicating growing public trust in institutional mental health and addiction support systems. The Health Department's Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATFs) treated 44,602 patients during the campaign period, including 44,263 OPD patients and 339 IPD admissions, with 148 patients successfully cured and released.

Social Welfare Department-operated DDAC Rehabilitation Centres received 441 patients, while 742 individuals underwent counselling sessions. Police-run DDAC centres registered 451 patients, with 786 counselled and 138 individuals successfully recovered.

J&K Police intensified anti-narcotics enforcement under the NDPS Act, registering 614 FIRs, arresting 646 persons, apprehending 435 drug peddlers, and identifying 160 drug hotspots.

As part of stringent deterrence measures, 37 houses linked to drug peddlers were sealed or demolished, immovable properties worth approximately Rs 25.97 crore were seized or attached, additional properties worth Rs 3.70 crore were demolished, and movable properties worth Rs 1.67 crore were seized.

Authorities cancelled 252 driving licenses, cancelled 111 vehicle registrations, suspended 104 drug store licenses, and cancelled 2 drug store licenses.

Security and enforcement agencies seized substantial quantities of narcotic substances, including 3.8 kg of heroin, 32.92 kg of charas, and 222.31 kg of ganja, while 21 marlas of illegal poppy cultivation were destroyed.

A total of 3,067 chemist shops were inspected, 2,815 CCTV cameras installed at vulnerable locations, and 977 schools and hospitals checked. Law enforcement agencies examined 107 suspects, identified 2,807 peddlers, and carried out 11 PIT-NDPS detentions under preventive detention laws.

The administration reiterated its firm commitment to realising the vision of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir through sustained public participation, robust enforcement, youth engagement, rehabilitation support, and coordinated institutional action, appealing to citizens, community leaders, educational institutions, religious organisations, and civil society groups to continue supporting the campaign.
