Srinagar, Jan 26: The 77th Republic Day was celebrated across Jammu and Kashmir on Monday with grandeur, patriotic fervour, and stringent security arrangements. Citizens across the Union Territory marked the occasion with official ceremonies, parades, and cultural programmes.
The main UT-level function was held at MA Stadium, Jammu, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presided over the celebrations and unfurled the national flag. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attended as the chief guest. The ceremony featured an impressive parade by armed forces, police, and paramilitary contingents, alongside vibrant cultural performances showcasing Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse heritage.
In Srinagar, the main function of the Kashmir Valley was held at Bakshi Stadium, where Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary presided over the celebrations and took the salute during the ceremonial march-past. Despite the chilly weather, contingents of Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NCC and schoolchildren participated in the parade, followed by cultural performances by artistes from different parts of the Valley.
A robust three-tier security arrangement was put in place at Bakshi Stadium, with all entry points heavily guarded by police and paramilitary forces. Additional security personnel were deployed in and around a one-kilometre radius of the venue, and only invited guests were allowed entry after strict checks.
Across the Union Territory, cabinet ministers and senior officials hoisted the national flag at district and sub-district headquarters. Minister Sakina Ittoo unfurled the Tricolour at Anantnag, while Minister Javed Dar presided over the celebrations in Baramulla. The national flag was hoisted at all government offices, educational institutions and public establishments.
Bakshi Stadium, with an estimated capacity of around 20,000, witnessed a near-full turnout, largely comprising government employees and invitees. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and several National Conference legislators from Srinagar were also present at the Srinagar
At Lal Chowk in Srinagar, tourists and residents from different states of the country gathered near the historic Ghanta Ghar, hoisted the Tricolour and actively participated in the celebrations.
The iconic Clock Tower area saw large crowds soaking in the festive mood, with people waving national flags and raising patriotic slogans.
Supporters of various political parties, including the BJP joined the large gathering at Lal Chowk and organised flag-hoisting ceremonies.
