Jammu, Oct 20: Jammu is all set to elect a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor as the elections for the twin posts would be held on Friday at 11 am through open ballot system of polling.
The former mayor Chander Mohan Gupta and his deputy Purnima Sharma resigned on September 24 to strengthen the party ahead of Assembly Polls in Jammu and Kashmir, thus paving for the elections. Their resignation was accepted on October 11.
Who’s contesting the polls?
While BJP has announced Rajinder Sharma, Corporator from Ward number 16, Prem Nagar, Jammu, as the party candidate for the post of Mayor, Congress has fielded CorporatorDwarkaNathChoudhary from Ward Number 46, Sanjay Nagar, Jammu for the post of Mayor.
For Deputy Mayor’s post, BJP has finalised the name of CorporatorBaldev Singh Balouria from Ward Number 56, Gangyal, Jammu, Congress has announced Sonika Sharma, Corporator from Ward Number 30, as its candidate. The nominations for the twin posts were filed on October 17 and elections would be held through a ballot paper system of polling.
Present position of the Corporation?
There are 73 Corporators in the current municipal corporation. Two have died. Of them, 44 are from BJP, 14 are independent and 13 are from Congress party.
The polls are being held after 4 years. On November 15, 2018, polls were held when Chander Mohan Gupta was elected as Mayor and Purnima Sharma as his deputy. Chander Mohan got 45 out of 75 votes defeating his rival independent Corporator Vijay Choudhary while Purnima got 46 votes and she defeated her rival CharanjeetKour of Congress. The 2018 polls were held through a secret ballot system of polling.
