Srinagar, Jan 18: The Jammu Tawi Railway Station is all set to undergo a major transformation, with a comprehensive modernisation project aimed at improving passenger experience, safety and operational efficiency.
The Rs 450 crore upgrade, scheduled for completion by March 2025, will expand the station’s infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and introduce advanced safety systems to cater to the growing transportation needs of the Jammu & Kashmir region.
Chief Public Relations Officer, Northern Railways Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay told Rising Kashmir that yard remodelling work at Jammu Tawi Railway Station is nearly complete, with non-interlocking work also expected to finish soon. It is a challenging task, but once completed, the station redevelopment will gain momentum, he said.
“The Rs 450 crore project focuses on expanding the station’s platforms from three to seven, incorporating state-of-the-art ballast-less track technology to ensure smoother train operations,” he said, adding that commissioning of the remodelled Jammu Tawi yard is scheduled for March 6, 2025.
Upadhyay further said that modernization of Jammu Tawi station will improve operational efficiency and hygiene at platforms. Each platform will be equipped with washable aprons, contributing to a cleaner environment.
“The project also includes the construction of two 12-meter-wide foot-over bridges to facilitate easier access, while a 72-meter-wide air concourse will connect all seven platforms. Additionally, a new 4,500 sqm second-entry station building on the Narwal side and an upgraded 15,600 sqm main station building with modern amenities are major milestones of the redevelopment,” he added.
Besides enhancing the station’s capacity to handle more trains, the yard remodelling will replace outdated mechanical interlocking systems with advanced electronic interlocking to boost safety and efficiency, among other upgrades.
Meanwhile, the redevelopment of Jammu Tawi Railway Station has led to the cancellation and rescheduling of several major trains, causing significant disruption to the travel plans of thousands of passengers, including pilgrims heading to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.
