Srinagar, August 20: Doctors in Jammu continued their protest for the fifth consecutive day against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The doctors, faculty members, students of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and its associated hospitals held a protest in the college campus to raise their voices against the gruesome incident.
The protestors, including resident doctors, emphasized the need to prioritize the safety of female staff in hospitals, whether in medical colleges or other healthcare facilities.
A spokesperson of Resident Doctors Association GMC Jammu said today they took out a peaceful protest till Shalimar Road and came back via Civil Secretariat road.
The protesting doctors gathered at the OPD premises and were holding placards which read “Justice for Our Sister”, “Safety for Doctors”, and “End Violence Against Women.”
The doctors demanded that if a female doctor is assigned night duties then they should be given night accommodation in hospitals so that they do not face any kind of incident.
To show solidarity with the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered in a Kolkata Hospital, GMC Jammu continues to hold candle light march to protest against injustice.
“The protesting doctors also demanded the Government authorities and medical bodies to urgently address the safety concerns and implement robust measures to safeguard healthcare professionals in the hospital premises,” the RDA spokesperson said.
They doctors said the tragic incident in Kolkata Hospital has left a deep scar on both the community and the broader medical profession.
The doctors appealed to the government to implement security measures in hospitals and medical institutions to protect doctors and other healthcare workers, especially women.
Doctors and medics across India have been holding protests, candlelight marches and even temporarily refused care for non-emergency patients.
On August 17, the Indian Medical Association had announced a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency medical services for 24 hours to protest against the rape and murder case.
On August 9, the body of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal, with severe injuries. The autopsy report said that the doctor had been raped.
