Awantipora, March 12: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Wednesday organ-ised a Philosophers’ Meet on the theme “The Present and Future of Philosophy,” bringing together scholars and academicians to explore the evolving role of philosophy in contemporary society. Host-ed by the Department of Philosophy, the event focused on the discipline’s relevance in addressing modern challenges.
In the inaugural session, Prof. Ayaz Hassan Moon, Dean of Academic Affairs, IUST, highlighted the department’s potential to contribute to contemporary discourse, while Prof. Abdul Wahid Ma-khdoomi, Registrar, IUST, emphasised philosophy’s interdisciplinary impact. Prof. Afroz Ahmad Bis-sati, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IUST, discussed the influence of Islamic philosophy on intellectual thought. Prof. Humayun Rashid, chairing a session on “The Argument and Action of Philosophy,” examined the discipline’s role in environmental sustainability, governance, and ethics, urging critical engagement with societal challenges. In another session, “Outreach: What Is to Be Done?” Dr. Ruheela Hassan stressed the need to extend philosophical discussions beyond academia to foster wider awareness and engagement.

The event saw active participation from faculty members, department heads, and representatives from various institutions, including Prof. Tabasum (Principal, GDC Beerwah), Dr. Jaleel Ehsan (HoD, GDC Boys Sopore), and Dr. Saliha Shah (GDC Women Baramulla), among others. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Muzaffar Ali, Coordinator, Department of Philosophy, IUST, who under-scored the importance of sustained philosophical discourse in Kashmir.
