New Delhi, Jan 11: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been bestowed with the prestigious “Indian of the Year Award” for the year 2023 in the category of ‘Outstanding Achievement.’ Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, presented the award to Team ISRO at a ceremony in New Delhi. ISRO Chairman S. Somnath and Chandrayaan 3 Project Director, Dr P. Veeramuthuvel, accepted the honor on behalf of the organization.
The award recognizes ISRO’s exceptional contributions to advancing the frontiers of space exploration. The citation highlighted the significant achievement of Chandrayaan-3, marking India’s first-ever soft landing on the Moon’s uncharted South Polar region in 2023. The mission, indigenous and cost-effective with a budget of approximately Rs. 600 Crore, showcased India’s prowess and resilience in space exploration.
Dr Jitendra Singh commended ISRO’s achievements, emphasizing the transformative leadership provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that the unlocking of space technology has allowed the common masses to witness mega space events like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya. The minister highlighted the nation’s active involvement in celebrating these space missions, fostering a sense of belonging.
The ceremony also acknowledged the expanding landscape of the Indian space sector, with the emergence of 190 private space startups. Dr Jitendra Singh highlighted the significant investments and contributions made by these startups, positioning India as a forefront nation in space exploration. He emphasized the parallel ascent of India in space technology as part of Prime Minister Modi’s vision for the nation’s overall progress.
The distinguished jury panel for the “Indian of the Year Awards” included iconic figures such as former Solicitor General of India Harish Salve, screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar, retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Indu Malhotra, former Indian athlete Anju Bobby George, chairperson of RP Sanjiv Goenka Group Sanjiv Goenka, and environmental activist and lawyer Afroz Shah.
The award recognizes ISRO’s pivotal role in elevating India’s standing in the global space community and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific and technological advancements.
