Islamia College conducts workshop on disaster management

Srinagar, June 24: In continuation to Jan Bhagidari & G-20 celebration, Islamia College conducted one day workshop on Disaster Management, in collaboration with SDRF, Disaster Management, Department of J&K, (UT).
Professor (Dr.) Khursheed A. Khan, Principal of the College graced the occasion as chief guest. On the onset in his inaugural address, he said that with the climate change, the dimension of disasters is also evolving. To cope up with the new challenges, technology can be a game changer. Prof. Khan praised the fast-improving co-ordination mechanism with disaster management department who is managing disaster within the UT of J&K. We cannot stop disasters to occur but preparedness can certainly save lives, Professor Khan, added.
Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Jhat, chief coordinator of the Jan Bhagidari & G-20 events of the college expressed his satisfaction in conducting such training and workshops on disaster preparedness in the campus. He thanked the instructors/trainers and resource persons from disaster management department of J&K. Coordinator of today’s event, Dr. Nusrat Parveen said that this training shall offer a platform to the students and NSS volunteers in particular involved in disaster management preparedness and to get aware about the latest technology being used in disaster management, advance equipment and to their best practices. 
Dr. Bilkees, Senior Consultant, an official from the department of disaster management department of J&K in her presentation expressed that, a disaster is a major disruption of a community or society’s ability to function that affects people, property, the economy or the environment and beyond the capacity of the affected community or society to deal using its own resources. While interacting with the students of the college during training, Dr. Bilkees said that this training would provide a common platform to all participating students for enhancing our planning & preparation for any natural eventuality. A disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human, material or environmental losses that exceeds the local capacity to respond, and calls for external assistance Dr. Bilkees added. 
Ajaz Ahmad, Trainer/Instructor from the department of disaster management J&K while imparting training to the students in the campus said that this training shall provide an opportunity for the stakeholders to share their best practices and work on their operational gaps to improve the response capabilities through mutual cooperation in case of any disaster.
