Intermittent rains lash Kashmir, MeT forecasts more downpour

Srinagar, May 02: Rains lashed plains while higher reaches of Kashmir received light snowfall on Tuesday bringing the temperatures down. The Meteorological Department has predicted an improvement in prevailing weather conditions from Thursday, officials said.
Meteorological Department officials said that some higher reaches in Kashmir including Z-Gali, Razdan top, Peer ki Gali, Sadhna Top and Zojila received fresh light snowfall. Meanwhile, intermittent rains continued in plains throughout the day.
Director MeT, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that brief spell of rain and along with thunderstorms at scattered places is expected on Wednesday towards late evening.
“From  May 4-6, weather will remain largely fair to partly cloudy.  There are chances of brief spell of Rain, thunderstorm towards late afternoon,” he said adding that on May 7 and 8 rain will lash maximum parts of Valley.
As per MeT records, Srinagar received 3.4 millimeters of rainfall between 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The mercury in the summer capital settled at 21.5 degrees Celsius.
The famous tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir had 6.1 mm of rain and recorded a maximum of 10.9 degrees Celsius against 17.2 degrees Celsius on Monday.
Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, received 0.9 mm of rainfall and recorded a high of 16.9 degrees Celsius, Kokernag received 6.1 mm of rain and recorded a high temperature of 15.9 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department, Srinagar has forecast significant improvement in the weather from Thursday and predicted mainly inclement weather till May 7.
A traffic police department spokesman from the past 24 hours, Jammu-Srinagar highway remained blocked for more than 8 hours due to restoration work at Dalwas Pasi and closure of C-N Tunnel closed by tunnel authority
 He said on Wednesday, subject to fair weather and road clearance, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar highway. TCU Jammu, Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.
Similarly, on the Srinagar-Leh road, one way traffic from Kargil towards Srinagar shall be allowed. These vehicles shall be allowed from Minimarg, LMVs at 0630 hrs. to 0730 hrs followed by HMVs upto 0930 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing, the spokesman said.
