Srinagar, Dec 08: Jammu and Kashmir Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order, Vijay Kumar, stated on Friday that significant progress has been made in the investigation into the killing of Inspector Masroor Wani, who succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS New Delhi on Thursday.
During a press briefing in Srinagar, ADGP Kumar revealed that multiple leads have been obtained in the case, emphasising that those responsible for Inspector Wani’s killing will be brought to justice soon.
The investigation has now become a collaborative effort between Jammu and Kashmir Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with the case officially transferred to the latter. ADGP Kumar issued fresh directives, urging strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to mitigate the risk of officers becoming soft targets, especially while on leave or performing duties.
In response to the inquiry regarding the measures taken by the police to prevent future attacks, ADGP stated that there exist several established protocols for law enforcement personnel, which will be strictly adhered to.
He added that despite issuing guidelines and increasing awareness, there can be shortcomings that result in unfortunate outcomes.
When questioned about the identity of the attackers, ADGP Kumar refrained from providing details about the ongoing investigation, affirming that those responsible for Wani’s killing would be either eliminated or arrested soon.
The wreath-laying ceremony for the fallen inspector took place at DPL, with senior officers from the administration and police in attendance. Floral tributes were paid to Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani as a mark of respect amidst tearful eyes.
During the funeral procession at Dangerpora Chowk, Eidgah, hundreds participated, expressing their grief. A prior wreath-laying ceremony occurred at District Police Lines (DPL) Srinagar in honour of the slain officer.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief RR Swain expressed condolences for Wani’s demise, reaffirming a heightened commitment to combating terrorism in the Union Territory. DGP Swain denounced the “cowardly attack” on a police officer during a moment of leisure as a vivid reminder of the malicious mindset propagated by terrorist networks with connections to Pakistan. He declared that this tragic incident served as a catalyst, fortifying the resolve of the J-K Police to intensify their efforts in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
