Srinagar, Sep 09: Two terrorists were killed along the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday morning as Army troops foiled an infiltration bid from the Pakistan side into Nowshera sector of Rajouri district of Jammu region.
Nagrota-based White Knight Corps spokesman said that based on inputs from intelligence agencies and Jammu and Kashmir Police regarding a likely infiltration bid, an anti-infiltration Operation was launched by Indian Army on the intervening night of 08-09 Sep 24 in general area Lam, Nowshera”.
“Two terrorists have been neutralised and a large quantity of war-like stores including two AK-47s and one pistol has been recovered so far,” he said.
The spokesman said search operations have resulted in the additional recovery of one M4 rifle. So far two AK-47, one M-4 with sight, one pistol, eight grenades, assorted ammunition, personal clothing and miscellaneous war like stores have been recovered, he said.
“Surveillance is being maintained and operations are in progress,” the spokesman added.
This comes nearly a week ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled to be held in J&K, with Rajouri set to go to the polls in the second phase on September 25.
Earlier on Sep o3, after a brief firing incident in Kehrot village of Thannamandi area of Rajouri district, security forces had launched a massive cordon and search operation to trace suspected terrorists.
Jammu region has witnessed several terror attacks, starting with the June 9 targeting of a pilgrim bus in Reasi, resulting in the killing of 11 passengers.
Terrorists used the element of surprise to carry out ambush attacks and then disappear into the forests of these hilly areas.
On July 8, terrorists ambushed a patrol of the Indian Army in Kathua’s Machedi, with five soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) losing their lives.
On July 15, four soldiers, including a Captain, were killed in action in an encounter with a separate group of terrorists in Doda district’s Desa forests.
To combat terrorism in the Jammu region, the government has initiated the distribution of SLRs (Semi-Automatic Rifles) to VDGs, with over 200 rifles already provided.
