Srinagar, Jan 27: Fresh snowfall on Tuesday threw life out of gear in Srinagar disrupting normal movement and causing widespread inconvenience to residents and commuters across the city.Several low-lying areas witnessed waterlogging as melting snow mixed with rainwater, while pavements and roads turned extremely slippery, leading to traffic snarls and delays during peak hours. Office-goers, students and shopkeepers were among the worst affected as slow-moving traffic and skidding vehicles marked the day. Local residents said the situation became particularly difficult in areas where drainage systems failed to cope with the sudden accumulation of water. “The road outside our locality has been waterlogged since morning. Vehicles are splashing dirty water and pedestrians have no space to walk,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Bemina.Commuters also complained of risky travel conditions due to slippery roads. “It took me almost double the usual time to reach my office. At many places, vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace because of fear of skidding,” said Faisal Ahmad, a daily commuter from Hazratbal to Lal Chowk. Shopkeepers in commercial hubs said customer footfall remained thin throughout the day. “People avoided coming out unless it was absolutely necessary. The snowfall may look beautiful, but it brings daily life to a halt,” said a trader at Residency Road.Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) said teams were on the ground to address waterlogging and related issues. “Our field staff is actively working to clear waterlogged areas and ensure smooth drainage. Dewatering pumps have been deployed at vulnerable spots,” an SMC official said, adding that the situation was being monitored continuously. Meanwhile, residents urged the administration to take preventive measures to avoid recurrence of such problems during future snowfall events.
