Poonch, Jan 28: Heavy snowfall across various areas of Mandi Tehsil in Poonch district has severely disrupted electricity supply, damaging transmission lines, power poles and transformers, and plunging several plain as well as upper hilly areas into prolonged darkness. The outages have caused considerable hardship to residents, particularly amid freezing temperatures. In response, the Power Development Department (PDD) has launched intensive restoration operations, working on a war footing to normalise electricity supply in the affected regions. Despite continuous snowfall and treacherous terrain, field staff have been deployed across vulnerable pockets to accelerate repair work. Speaking to the media, Assistant Executive Engineer Mohammad Farooq said the department’s teams are working relentlessly under challenging conditions. He informed that out of a total of 508 transformers in Mandi Tehsil, power supply has already been restored to 410 transformers, while repair work on the remaining units is progressing steadily. “The restoration of the remaining transformers will be completed shortly,” he assured, adding that electricity has been fully restored in several areas, while nearly 70 percent restoration has been achieved in many others. Farooq said restoration efforts in higher reaches such as Mandi, Loran, Sawjian and other mountainous areas are facing difficulties due to heavy snowfall. However, he added that separate PDD teams have been deployed in each affected area to ensure faster repairs and minimise inconvenience to the public. “Damaged transmission lines and power poles are being taken up on priority. Within the next few days, electricity supply will be ensured in all remaining areas,” he said. Reiterating the department’s commitment, the Assistant Executive Engineer said all possible and effective measures are being taken to restore electricity across Mandi Tehsil at the earliest, so that residents are spared further hardship during the harsh winter spell.
