'Two special schools proposed in Sopore, Anantnag'

Srinagar, Apr 04: The government on Saturday said there is currently no designated special school for children with disabilities in Kupwara district, while outlining steps to support such students through mainstream schools.
Replying to a question tabled by MLA Qaysar Jamshaid Lone, the government said education for children with special needs is being provided under the policy of inclusive education.
Under this approach, children with disabilities are enrolled in regular government schools and provided support services including identification and assessment, assistive devices, resource support and trained teaching assistance.
The government said it is taking steps to strengthen inclusive and barrier-free educational facilities across districts, including Kupwara, to ensure access to education.
It also informed the House that special and inclusive schools are being run across the Union Territory in collaboration with NGOs and other organisations.
The government said two special schools have been proposed, one at Hadipora in Sopore and another at Dailgam in Anantnag, which will be established after completion of formalities.
It added that the approach is to strengthen mainstream schools while also setting up specialised institutions at the regional level.
