Srinagar, Apr 02: The Jammu and Kashmir government informed the Legislative Assembly that no specific initiative has been undertaken so far to formally introduce or promote pashmina goat rearing in the higher reaches of Gurez Valley.
Replying to a question raised by Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan, Minister for Agriculture Production Department Javed Ahmad Dar said that while pashmina goat rearing is traditionally practiced in certain high-altitude areas of the Union Territory, the department has not launched any dedicated scheme to promote the activity in Gurez.
The minister further clarified that the Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department is not currently pursuing any specific initiative related to pashmina goat rearing in the region under its existing schemes.
Responding to a query on whether such initiatives had been discontinued and the reasons behind it, the minister said the question does not arise in view of the earlier replies. However, he added that the department continues to implement breed upgradation and small ruminant development programmes across all districts of Kashmir, including Gurez, based on agro-climatic suitability.
He said the government has prioritised the promotion of the sheep and goat sector through the introduction and distribution of superior germplasm suited to local conditions. Under various Union Territory and centrally sponsored schemes such as the Integrated Sheep Development Scheme, Tribal Sub Plan, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and National Livestock Mission, sheep and goat units are being provided to beneficiaries.
The minister also informed the House that improved goat breeds are being maintained at the Government Goat Farm in Arin Dardpora to ensure the availability of quality breeding stock. In addition, efforts are underway to conserve and propagate the indigenous Polycerous Gurezi goat breed in identified areas.
He added that the department is exploring the introduction of suitable milch goat breeds in selected regions, including Gurez, to promote dairy-oriented goat rearing and enhance livelihood opportunities for the local population.
