Srinagar, Feb 21: For years, the Barzulla hospital corridor has been synonymous with gridlock ambulances inching forward, attendants scrambling for parking space, and residents navigating through a daily maze of honking vehicles. Authorities revealed that a set of targeted infrastructure measures could begin to ease the pressure. Speaking to media persons, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Srinagar Ajaz Ahmad said a newly macadamised stretch laid by the R&B Department at Barzulla is already improving vehicular movement, particularly up to the new block in the locality. “The macadamised road has been created to increase traffic mobility till the new block of Barzulla,” he said, adding that smoother surfaces help regulate flow in one of the city’s most sensitive traffic zones. The area witnesses heavy congestion owing to its proximity to major healthcare facilities and dense residential clusters. For patients and their attendants, parking has long been a daily struggle, with vehicles often lining both sides of the road and narrowing carriage space. Addressing this concern, Ahmad said a proposal has been put forward for constructing a parking ramp near the hospital. “There was no proper parking space for people visiting the hospital. The proposed ramp will help them and reduce roadside parking. This will ultimately improve overall mobility,” he said. In a broader connectivity plan, authorities are also working to link Barzulla Bridge to Chanpora through the Bund route. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been forwarded, and work is expected to begin in the current financial year. “The project will join the right bank of the Bund from Chanpora to Sanat Nagar. Once completed, it will provide an alternative route and help decongest existing pressure points,” the SSP said. Traffic volumes across the city have risen with the reopening of educational institutions, bringing back peak-hour rush at major junctions. The Traffic Police, Ahmad said, are closely monitoring the situation to prevent bottlenecks. Officials are also keeping a watch on traffic movement during Sehri hours in Ramadan, when early-morning activity often results in temporary congestion in several neighbourhoods. “We are making efforts to tackle traffic jams during Sehri time as well,” he said.
