Srinagar, Dec 30: Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) on Tuesday said that 100 new buses have been approved for Kashmir and are expected to arrive in Srinagar by June, a move that is likely to provide much-needed relief to commuters.

An SSCL official told Rising Kashmir that the matter regarding additional buses had already been taken up with the government. “The new buses have been approved under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme and are expected to reach Srinagar by June,” the official said.

He said that the city and its adjoining areas require more buses to ease daily commuting. “Once these buses arrive, they will significantly improve public transport services,” he added.

The Government of India launched the PM-eBus Sewa scheme on August 16, 2023, with the objective of augmenting urban bus services by deploying 10,000 electric buses across the country under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

At present, SSCL operates 98 buses across Srinagar city and its outskirts, which have attracted commuters and significantly eased travel for a large section of the population.

Earlier, commuters in Srinagar had complained about a shortage of Smart City buses on various routes, especially during the winter months, stating that reduced frequency caused serious inconvenience, particularly during peak hours.

Responding to these concerns, a SSCL official said that buses maintain a gap of around 40 minutes on each route. “When one bus plies on a route and the next arrives after 40 minutes, it creates a perception of shortage,” the official said.
