Srinagar, Nov 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that if Muslim students are not wanted in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), then the institution should be given minority status so that such issues do not arise in the future.
Speaking to reporters, Omar said admissions to the college were made on the basis of NEET and entrance examinations and not on the basis of religion.
He said that when the Shrine Board established the medical college, it could have declared it a minority institute if it intended to reserve seats only for a particular community.
“If you want Muslim children not to study in the medical college, give it minority status. Our children will not study there and will seek admission somewhere else,” Omar said.
The CM said that Muslim students had no objection to the name of the institution and chose it based on their academic prospects. “They are ready to study in institutions like Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College without any issue. But if you target them even then, the responsibility does not lie with them,” he said.
Omar said similar criticism was raised when students from Jammu and Kashmir took admission in educational institutions in Faridabad and other states.
He said those questioning admissions should not blame the entire community if young students later choose to study outside the country.
“If the college is declared a minority institute, it will reserve seats according to rules, and Muslim students will go to other medical colleges in India or abroad,” he said.
