GDC Kulgam, Shopian faculty publish research in Physical Review Letters

Kulgam/Shopian, Dec 24: Faculty members of Government Degree College (GDC) Kulgam and Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian have published a collaborative research paper in Physical Review Letters (PRL), one of the world’s most reputed and selective journals in physics.

According to a statement issued here, the research was carried out by Dr. Sheikh Jehangir Ahmad of GDC Kulgam and Dr. Gowhar Hussain Bhat of GDC Shopian, in collaboration with Prof. Sheikh Javid Ahmad and an international team of scientists. The study reports the first observation of multi-phonon gamma vibrational bands in an odd-odd nucleus (¹⁰⁴Nb), offering new insights into nuclear structure and collective motion in atomic nuclei.

According to the authors, the findings enhance understanding of how unpaired protons and neutrons influence nuclear deformation and shape coexistence. The experimental results are supported by advanced theoretical calculations and were conducted using data from leading international laboratories in the United States, France, China and India.

Principals of both institutions, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Abbas Shah of GDC Kulgam and Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Shafiq of GDC Shopian, congratulated the faculty members, stating that the publication reflects the growing research culture in government degree colleges of the region.
