Srinagar, Jan 12: The Food Safety Department (FSD) on Monday unearthed a racket involved in the manufacture and sale of fake honey and desi ghee in Srinagar.
A team from FSD Srinagar, led by Assistant Commissioner Yameen Ul Nabi, conducted joint raids in Qamarwari and Barthana areas in coordination with the police from Qamarwari Police Station.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Yameen said that during the inspections, officials seized adulterated ghee and honey being falsely marketed as Kashmiri ghee. The team also recovered objectionable substances suspected to be used as adulterants.
He said sugar packs and honey believed to be intended for use in adulteration were also confiscated. In total, 36 kilograms of ghee and 12 kilograms of honey were seized, and samples have been sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Yameen added that a room in Barthana area was sealed after it was found to be storing suspected adulterated stock.
The Food Safety Department has appealed to consumers to purchase food products only from authentic and reliable sources and to stay alert against adulteration. The public has also been urged to report any suspicious activity related to food safety to the department.
FSD officials said the department has intensified its enforcement drives across the city.
