Srinagar, Nov 12: As winter sets in across the Valley, the District Magistrate of Srinagar has issued a public advisory, urging residents to adopt precautionary measures to prevent fire incidents during the cold season.

The advisory, released from the District Magistrate’s Office at Tankipora, calls for vigilance and responsible use of heating appliances and traditional Kangris

The administration has advised people to unplug electrical heating gadgets and ensure LPG stoves are properly switched off before going to bed or leaving home.

Citizens have been warned against using sub-standard or faulty electrical appliances, such as high-wattage heaters and defective electric blankets, which often cause household fires during winter.

The advisory also urges residents to handle Kangris with care and keep them in safe places during nights to prevent accidents. It further instructs people to avoid storing dry grass, wood, or other combustible material inside homes and to keep such items in isolated areas away from residential spaces.

People are encouraged to use good-quality electrical fuses and ensure proper circuit protection with miniature circuit breakers. Electric wires should be kept away from hot or wet surfaces to avoid short circuits. Residents are also reminded to turn off the stove and LPG cylinder when not in use and to maintain proper ventilation while using gas heaters.

The administration stressed the importance of keeping escape routes and water access points clear, especially in residential and market areas. Citizens have also been cautioned not to discard live cigarette butts carelessly.

“In case of any fire incident, people should immediately call Fire and Emergency Services on toll-free number 101 or contact the Srinagar Control Room at 0194-2452155 or 2452222,” the advisory stated.

Reminding citizens about the dangers of negligence, the statement concluded with the line, “Fire is a good servant but a bad master,” highlighting that while fire provides comfort during winter, it can become destructive if not handled with care.
