Srinagar, Nov 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday asserted that linking education to religion is against the idea of the Constitution. He said denying opportunities on religious grounds will damage the country’s democratic structure. Speaking at an event at Jamia Zia-ul-Uloom, Omar said the trend of giving religious colour to education is increasing. “Today, education is being given the colour of religion. Even in medical colleges, it is said that Muslims should not study here or non-Hindus should not study here,” he said. The CM said decisions about students must be based on merit. “If we set aside the merit of children and start taking decisions on the basis of religion, then tell me where the Constitution of the country will go,” he added. Abdullah said those who speak about constitutional values should look at institutions that promote unity. “Those who teach us lessons on the Constitution should look at the students, the teachers and the administration here. Look at Maulana Ghulam Qadir Sahib,” he said. The Chief Minister said the institution has played an important role during sensitive situations in the region. “Whenever the situation here became delicate, the government looked towards Maulana Ghulam Qadir Sahib first. He always helped the government to improve the situation and maintain brotherhood,” he said. Omar said Jamia Zia-ul-Uloom has contributed during natural disasters as well. “When a natural disaster came, the Jamia played its role and tried to help people,” he said. "Students from the institution have cleared competitive examinations. This is the result of UPSC, KAS and KPS in which children not only appear but also succeed,” he added. The CM said he decided to attend the event despite other commitments. “I thought it was necessary to put all my responsibilities aside and somehow reach here today,” he said.
