Srinagar, September 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appreciated the insights and expertise shared by Prof. Harsh K. Gupta,  former member of the National Disaster Management Authority and former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences,  during their meeting, emphasising the critical importance of strengthening earthquake resilience and disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir. “The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is committed to developing resilient infrastructure and robust public safety systems,” the Chief Minister said, assuring that Prof. Gupta’s recommendations would be incorporated into the Union Territory’s broader disaster risk management strategy. Prof. Harsh.K Gupta called on the Chief Minister at the Public Outreach (Raabita) Office to discuss strengthening earthquake resilience and preparedness in the region. Prof. Gupta highlighted the urgent need to develop earthquake-resilient infrastructure in Kashmir, a region situated in the vulnerable Himalayan earthquake belt. Drawing attention to the success of a medium-term earthquake forecast in the northeast Himalayan region, he emphasized the importance of conducting similar scientific studies in Kashmir. He advocated for initiatives such as designating an “Earthquake Safety Day,” training school students on earthquake preparedness, creating detailed scenarios based on past major earthquakes to improve readiness, organizing large-scale mock drills, ensuring strict adherence to earthquake-safe construction standards, and deploying Earthquake Early Warning Systems along the Himalayan belt. Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani and Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), were also present during the interaction.
