Srinagar, Feb 19: The Child Guidance and Wellbeing Center (CGWC), Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), successfully organised a 10-day Certificate Course on “Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being of Children” from 9th to 18th February 2026 at SMHS Hospital. The course was conducted with the support of UNICEF and marked a significant milestone in capacity building for child and adolescent mental health in Jammu and Kashmir.
The intensive certificate course was attended by 24 undergraduate psychology students, constituting the first batch with whom CGWC-IMHANS initiated this structured, skill-oriented training program. Designed to strengthen knowledge and practical competencies, the course focused on key thematic areas including Child Rights, Introduction to Mental Health and Neurodevelopmental Issues, Role of Frontline Workers in Mental Health Promotion, Female Mental Health with emphasis on Mothers and Adolescent Girls, Positive Parenting, and the Impact of social media on Children and Adolescents.
The sessions were delivered by an interdisciplinary panel of resource persons comprising experts from CGWC-IMHANS, IMHANS, University of Kashmir, and other relevant academic and professional backgrounds. To ensure meaningful engagement and applied learning, the faculty employed interactive pedagogies such as role plays, case vignettes, short films, group discussions, and participatory activities.
Initiating this 10-day certificate course represents a landmark achievement for CGWC-IMHANS, laying the foundation for similar capacity-building programs for frontline workers and community-level professionals. The initiative aligns with CGWC-IMHANS’ ongoing commitment to strengthening mental health and psychosocial support systems at the grassroots level, thereby enhancing early identification, prevention, and care for children and adolescents.
The successful completion of the first batch underscores the growing need and relevance of structured training in child and adolescent mental health, and CGWC-IMHANS aims to continue and expand such programs in the future.
