Srinagar, Jan 28: A week after its inauguration by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the newly renovated Amira Kadal pedestrian bridge has quickly emerged as a new public attraction in Srinagar’s city centre, drawing locals and tourists alike.
Located close to Lal Chowk, the bridge has become a bustling spot, especially during evening hours, with people stopping to admire the Jhelum, take photographs, and spend leisure time. Many residents say the bridge has added a fresh charm to the area, complementing the already popular clock tower at Lal Chowk.
Locals visiting the bridge said the renovation has transformed the space into a pleasant public zone. “Earlier, people would just cross the bridge and move on. Now, it feels like a place where you can pause, enjoy the view, and spend time,” said Adil Ahmad, a resident of downtown Srinagar.
Shopkeepers in the Goni market said the increased footfall has had a positive impact on business. “Since the bridge opened, more people are coming to this side, especially in the evenings. It has definitely helped our sales,” said a shopkeeper who has been running a store in the area for over two decades.
Tourists visiting Srinagar have also added the bridge to their list of photo spots. “We came to Lal Chowk, and someone told us about this new bridge. The view of the river and the surroundings is beautiful. It’s a perfect place for pictures,” said Ritu Sharma, a tourist from Mumbai.
Many residents believe the bridge has helped create a more pedestrian-friendly space in the heart of the city. “Such places are important for public life. It gives people a safe and open space to relax,” said a local commuter.
The renovated Amira Kadal pedestrian bridge was opened to the public last week as part of efforts to upgrade urban infrastructure and enhance public spaces in Srinagar. Since its opening, the bridge has steadily grown into a popular gathering point, adding a new landmark to the city center.
Officials of SSCL highlighted the broader goals behind the project.
“The redevelopment of the Amira Kadal pedestrian bridge has not only enhanced walkability and safety but also revived a heritage space for community engagement and tourism,” an SSCL official said, emphasising the corporation’s commitment to blending heritage preservation with modern urban design.
