Women's reservation should not be tied to Census, Delimitation: M Y Tarigami
Srinagar, Apr 18: CPI(M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami on Saturday said that women have equal status in the journey of life as men, and their contribution is already ahead, but justice has not been delivered to them so far, especially in key institutions like Parliament and Assemblies, where they remain underrepresented.
He said this is not because of any lack of talent among women but due to social inequalities and hierarchies that have led to their neglect.
He referred to a senior woman parliamentarian from Bengal, Mukherjee, who had once led a parliamentary committee and made recommendations on reservation, suggesting that certain seats be reserved to ensure better participation of women and empowerment of sisters, daughters and mothers.
Tarigami said the women's reservation bill was introduced in Parliament in 2023, debated, and was supposed to be passed, but the current BJP government introduced unnecessary amendments and linked it with the Census and Delimitation.
He said the bill has been kept pending since 2023 and questioned what the Census and Delimitation have to do with women's reservation, adding that it is a separate issue that requires a separate law.
He further said the opposition had agreed that only discussion and voting on the bill should take place and that they would support it, but it was instead linked with Delimitation, creating confusion.
Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, he said Delimitation has already been carried out in the region and that the 2011 Census was sidelined, adding that political manipulation was carried out in the process.
Tarigami said linking such a serious issue with other matters only com-plicates it further and is neither acceptable earlier nor acceptable today.
He said the struggle will continue across the country for reservation for women so that sisters, mothers and daughters get their rightful participation, adding that otherwise the journey remains incomplete.
