Srinagar, Oct 16: Director General of Police (DGP) Jammu and Kashmir, NalinPrabhat, on Thursday paid tribute to 1,614 police personnel who laid down their lives while fighting against Pakistan, calling it the ultimate sacrifice for patriotism. "For the sake of patriotism and in the fight against Pakistan, 1,614 of our comrades have laid down their lives," DGP Prabhat said while addressing the All India Police Judo Cluster–2025 event held in Srinagar. Highlighting the multi-dimensional role of the J&K Police, he said that beyond combating terrorism, the force actively engages in youth outreach, civic action, and sporting events to strengthen its connection with the public. "Along with fighting the enemy, we also focus on youth engagement and public outreach. Through sporting events and civic action programs, we aim to build a lasting relationship with the community and the Army," he said. Citing recent initiatives, Prabhat noted that over 2,500 people participated in the Federal Peace Cycle Rally, while a prior Marathon for Peace drew more than 4,000 participants. He added that the Martyrs Memorial Tournament is gaining momentum across the region, with 41 teams participating in the October edition. “Our cricket tournament in Kathua will be held in the coming months. Many teams have already shown interest. In 2025, we plan to host 72 types of sporting events at the district level, with participation expected in the thousands,” he said. DGP Prabhat also acknowledged the financial backing that has made these initiatives possible. “I thank the Ministry of Home Affairs for allocating ₹9 crore under the Civic Action Programme. I’m proud to share that 90% of the budget has already been utilised for community initiatives.” On the police force’s achievements in sports, the DGP said that since 2000, the J&K Police has organised 17 All India Police tournaments. “We’ve won the All India Police Water Sports Championship three times and the Patriot Salute twice. At the national level, our athletes have bagged 58 gold, 40 silver, and 78 bronze medals. Internationally, we’ve secured 13 gold, 40 silver, and 6 bronze medals.” He expressed gratitude to officers, coaches, and teams participating in the Judo Cluster, acknowledging that while some challenges remained, efforts would be made to improve future events. "Our guests, coaches, and officers have shown great hospitality and commitment. We may not have addressed every challenge, but we are determined to prepare better for the future," he said. The DGP also extended thanks to the J&K Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports for their invaluable support in organizing the event. “Without their assistance, this program would not have been possible,” he said, also appreciating the presence of the chief guests.
