Srinagar, Jan 24: As the much-awaited snow continues to elude Kashmir, the iconic ski resort of Gulmarg has found a novel way to cater to snow enthusiasts.
The introduction of helicopter joy rides by Abdul Majeed Bakshi is transforming the otherwise snowless terrain into an exhilarating experience.
Despite the disappointment stemming from the lack of snowfall, Bakshi’s helicopter service promises a unique and enjoyable perspective.
“The aim is to alleviate the discontent caused by the absence of snowfall and dry weather in Gulmarg, providing tourists with the opportunity to relish the beauty of Sunshine Peak and Afarwat Peak from the skies,” Bakshi said.
The introduction of helicopter joy rides has injected a thrilling dimension into Gulmarg’s tourism, filling the void left by the prolonged wait for snowfall in most parts of the valley.
Bakshi’s initiative is gaining traction, attracting tourists eager to explore the high peaks and witness the natural beauty from a different vantage point.
Tour operator Bilal Ahmad expressed disappointment prevalent among tourists and those associated with the tourism industry. “I have never seen Gulmarg so dull. Gulmarg is all about snow, and now, January has almost ended with no snow. Everyone is anxiously waiting.” laments Ahmad.
Each helicopter ride comes at a cost of around Rs 13,000 per person. All domestic tourists embrace this unique adventure. Tourist Vignesh from Tamil Nadu, originally hoping for a snowy experience, opted for the joy ride to witness the snow-capped mountain peaks.
Born and brought up in Tangmarg, Bakshi’s deep connection with Gulmarg dates back to childhood. In 1996, with no Gondola or ski lift, he was already guiding tourists and introduced freeriding. His journey led him to complete a course in Alpine Heli Ski in Queenstown, New Zealand. Now, with experienced foreign pilots and ski guides, Bakshi navigates Gulmarg’s peaks and slopes with unparalleled expertise.
