Srinagar, Dec 18: For the first time, work in laparoscopy/thoracoscopy (rare laparoscopic surgery) conducted at GMC Srinagar has been selected for presentation in Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) annual conference 2024.
Head Department of Surgery, GMC Srinagar Prof. (Dr) Iqbal Saleem Mir, said this is for the first time that Govt. Medical College, Srinagar has achieved this feat.
“Pleased to share that our work in laparoscopy/thoracoscopy has been selected for presentation in SAGES annual conference 2024,” he said.
Doctors said that the rare surgery was performed involving the stomach and lungs on a female patient. The doctors who managed the patient said that the patient sought medical attention nearly three months ago in critical condition and that the case was managed.
They said that conducting this type of surgery, which was critical, was an important achievement in the history of healthcare and of the medical college.
Explaining the procedure, Dr Iqbal said the patient had a hole in the diaphragm, causing entire stomach to move into the chest cavity, coupled with perforation, leading to complications.
“This resulted in the collapse of one lung, with the patient’s oxygen saturation dropping to just 68 percent,” he said. During the laparoscopic surgery, the doctor said that the stomach was carefully returned to the abdomen and the perforations were sealed.
He mentioned that the chest cavity was cleared, and the hole in the diaphragm was rectified. “Anesthesia was administered to one side of the lung and then the other, with a dedicated anesthesia team overseeing the procedure,” Dr Iqbal said.
Dr Abdul Hameed, Associate Professor at GMC, Srinagar, noted that the patient would have needed more stitches in the chest and abdomen under normal circumstances. However, the laparoscopic procedure facilitated immediate improvements.
Despite the rare surgery, the patient was discharged on the fifth day without any postoperative complications.
The doctors of the department recognized the rare surgery and submitted a video of surgery to the SAGES for review and it was selected for a video presentation at 2024 SAGES annual meeting to be held between April 17-20, 2024 at the Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Impressed with the procedure, SAGES invited the medical team to present their work at a podium presentation in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, thus bringing international recognition to the medical college.
