Ganderbal, Dec 31: Sonamarg, the renowned tourist destination located 82 km from the summer capital, Srinagar, has become a magnet for visitors, attracting a staggering 2,245,822 tourists from 2017 to December 2023.
This Famous hill station in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district captivates with its snow-clad mountains against a pristine backdrop.
Official data reveals a consistent rise in tourist numbers over the past seven years. The figures from January 2017 to December 2023 demonstrate a significant surge in both domestic and foreign visitors.
From January 2017 to December 2017, the recorded numbers were 93,663 domestic visitors, 5,845 foreigners, and 80,903 locals. The upward trend continued, peaking in 2022 with 626,751 domestic tourists, 4,085 foreigners, and 87,626 locals.
The period from January 2023 to November 2023 witnessed a notable surge, with 614,678 domestic visitors, 7,022 foreigners, and 52,866 locals.
The lure of snowfall beckoned tourists to iconic locations such as Gagangeer Sonmarg, Fishpoint, Thajwas, Zero-Point, and the last village of Sarbal.
Local businesses and hospitality services reaped the benefits of this surge, experiencing heightened demand for accommodations, guided tours, and local experiences. The economic impact is evident, with Sonamarg’s tourism sector receiving a significant boost.
Local hoteliers express gratitude to the administration for their promotional efforts, with optimism for future events and cultural programs enhancing the tourism sector.
As the influx of tourists continues, Sonamarg’s tourism sector is poised for further growth, solidifying its status as a must-visit destination on the global tourism map.
In a notable development, Sonamarg has embraced winter tourism over the past three years, defying the chill and welcoming tourists with open arms. Official sources from the Sonmarg Development Authority highlight their commitment to enhancing accessibility and visitor experiences.
Preparations for winter sports events are in full swing, with a focus on water supply, healthcare facilities, and maintaining clear roads to hotels. The collaboration by Distt Administration Ganderbal, Tourism Department and Sonamarg Development Authority efforts aim not only to open up Sonamarg during winter but also to provide better facilities for tourists.
Excitement builds as Sonamarg prepares to introduce ice skating for the first time this winter for which students started training. This addition is anticipated to bring joy to locals and present significant employment opportunities for the youth.
Residents see this as a chance for the youth to engage in a new sport, acquire skills, and contribute to the local economy. With winter tourism expanding its offerings, Sonamarg is set to provide a memorable experience for visitors and a thriving economic boost for the region.
