Srinagar, Dec 08: To celebrate its 150th anniversary, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in collaboration with the South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA) and the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), is organizing a National Meteorological Olympiad on Weather and Climate Science for Society.

Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that this Olympiad aims to engage students and educators across the country, promoting awareness about meteorology, climate science, and their critical role in environmental sustainability.

“Students from both Kashmir and Jammu regions can take advantage of this unique opportunity to engage with weather and climate sciences,” he said.

Dr Mukhtar said this Olympiad aims to foster awareness about meteorology and its critical role in addressing climate variability and environmental sustainability.

“Students from classes 8, 9, and 11 in J&K can participate in this free competition, showcasing their knowledge and exploring innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The state-level examination will be held online from December 14-15, 2024, with registration closing on December 10, 2024,” he added.

Dr Mukhtar said that the top three winners from J&K will be invited to the national-level contest in New Delhi, where they will represent the region and compete for prestigious awards. IMD will cover travel and accommodation expenses for participants and accompanying guardians, he added.

He further said that this is a golden opportunity for students in J&K to explore meteorology, a field with immense relevance to the region’s unique climate challenges.

“We encourage young talent to participate and represent our Jammu and Kashmir,” Director MeT said.

Meanwhile, the Olympiad is open to students in two categories: Junior Level for classes 8 and 9, and Senior Level for class 11. Participation is entirely free, and registration can be completed online through the IMD’s official website.

The competition will progress through two stages: a state-level online examination and a national-level contest in New Delhi.

Registrations for the event began on December 1, 2024, and will close on December 10, 2024. The state-level exam is scheduled for December 14-15, 2024, with results to be announced on December 17, 2024.
