Jammu, Feb 09: Iltija Mufti, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, on Sunday demanded a judicial inquiry over the death of Billawar youth who allegedly died in police custody.
“I was not allowed to address media persons at Jammu and have been detained,” she said while talking to reporters from inside the gate of a Guest House in Jammu.
Mufti said the ruling National Conference leadership was supposed to meet the family of the deceased but its leaders are enjoying lunch and dinner in Delhi.
She said that SHO Billawar has not discharged his duties honestly and there are a lot of allegations against him. “We demand a judicial inquiry into the death of Billawar youth to ascertain the exact reasons behind his death,” she said.
Earlier, the PDP leader met the family of the youth, Makhan Din (25), from Billawar area of Kathua, who allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday after alleged torture by police over his suspected links with terrorists. This comes a day after Iltija claimed that she and her mother Mehbooba Mufti had been placed under house arrest.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said, “Finally Iltija managed to reach Billawar in Kathua to meet the bereaved family of Makhan Din, who was driven to suicide by police torture.”
It is deeply saddening that she (Iltija) had to endure so many obstacles and travel like a fugitive just to offer comfort to the victim’s family, she said in her post on the social media platform ‘X’.
