IEI Jammu observes World Engineering Day

Participants share expertise on sustainable engineering solutions

Jammu, March 4: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Centre marked ‘World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development’ Tuesday under the theme “Unleashing the Power of Engineers to Advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” The event brought together engineers from various departments, organisations and senior members of the IEI Jammu Local Centre to highlight the pivotal role of engineering in fostering sustainability.
Er. Raheela Wani, FIE, Managing Director, J&K Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Er. Anil Verma, FIE, Chairman, IEI Jammu Centre, presided over the function. In his welcome address, Er. Anil Verma underscored the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as global benchmarks for a sustainable future. He acknowledged the crucial role of engineers in achieving these targets and urged citizens to contribute by adopting eco-friendly initiatives such as installing rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He also highlighted the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide clean drinking water, and called for greater collaboration among engineers in academia, research, and implementation to create a more sustainable world.
The seminar featured insightful presentations by Er. P.K. Nanda, FIE; Er. Ranjeev Sawhney, MIE; Er. Hemdeep Singh Ishar, AMIE, and Er. Anil Kumar Shan, AMIE, who shared their expertise on sustainable engineering solutions. Delivering her address, Chief Guest Er. Raheela Wani commended the engineers for their thought-provoking presentations and stressed the need for incorporating sustainability principles into engineering curricula. She highlighted the significance of training engineers not only in technical skills but also in sustainable development practices. Additionally, she advocated for greater collaboration between NGOs, private entrepreneurs, and governments to drive sustainable projects. She urged engineers to stay updated with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data, which play a crucial role in advancing sustainable engineering solutions. Er. Avneet Gupta, MIE, Honorary Secretary, IEI Jammu Centre, conducted the proceedings and delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the attendees and media personnel for their active participation.
