A pall of gloom descended in the Gujjar Basti Avil Manzgam area in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Friday after an elderly man died on Friday morning while his residential house gutted in a fire incident in the afternoon.

An official said that the residential house of Mohammad Ashraf Khatana son of Ali Mohd Khatana was damaged in a fire incident that engulfed it at around 12.50 PM on Friday.

A family member told Rising Kashmir that Ali Mohammad Khatana, 90 died on Friday morning.

While the family was mourning the death of Ali Mohammad, the house caught fire in the afternoon.

“The second story of the house and its roof were gutted completely in the incident. However, despite efforts in the ongoing heavy snowfall, the damage was minimized with the efforts of locals,” he said.

As per the preliminary assessment, property worth two lakhs were gutted in the incident, and property worth 14 lakhs was saved, an official said.

Officials said the preliminary investigation suggests gas leakage was the reason for the incident.

Bashir Ul Hassan, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Noorabad told Rising Kashmir that immediate relief was given to the family.

“Tehsildar and other officials visited the family despite inclement weather and necessary relief were handed over to the family. After proper assessment the fire incident family will get additional relief,” he said.
