Pulwama, Aug 07: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama, Dr.Basharat Qayoom on Monday presided over the concluding ceremony of the first edition of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hockey tournament as chief guest.
The tournament was played on league basis and all the ten districts of the Kashmir division participated in this event.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that series of sports activities have been started in the district under the banner of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” (AKAM) and Pulwama is becoming hub for sports activities. He thanked the YSS department for providing youth of Pulwama a chance to organise such wonderful tournaments and also impressed upon all the participants to take active role in building sports culture in the District.
He further highlighted that sports infrastructure is being developed on national standards and state of the art synthetic hockey Stadium is attracting youth who get their skills honed to represent state and country in the advanced levels of the game.
At the end of the event, the DC felicitated the winners and runners up teams with trophies.
Dr. Basharat reiterated that more measures will be taken to involve the youth in different sports activities so that they do not only play it for entertainment but get trained to play professionally to make sports a career option.
