Srinagar, Jan 04: In a significant anti-terror operation, The Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested Javed Mattoo, a wanted terrorist associated with the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, in the national capital on Thursday. Arms and ammunition and a stolen car were recovered from his possession, police said.
Talking to media persons, Special Commissioner of Delhi Police HGS Dhaliwal said with the coordination of Special Cell of Delhi Police and central agencies, Javed Mattoo, an A++ category terrorist who has a bounty of ₹10 lakh on him, was arrested on Thursday…After taking him into police custody remand, we will further action against him.
“A pistol, six live cartridges, and a stolen vehicle were seized from Mattoo,” the police commissioner said, adding that further action will be taken after getting remand of the terrorist from the court.
Mattoo, a resident of Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, was involved in five grenade attacks in the union territory. He was also responsible for the killing of five police personnel in different incidents.
According to the police, Mattoo is one of the last surviving A++ designated terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir. He was held after a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had launched a search operation for him.
A police officer told Rising Kashmir that Mattoo had a significant role in multiple violent incidents, including the killing of HC Mohammed Yousuf of CID near the Police Station in Sopore in 2010. Additionally, Mattoo was implicated in an attack on the residence of SP, Sopore, causing partial damage in 2010, as well as the killing of two CRPF personnel in Pattan and the subsequent snatching of their service rifles in the same year.
“He faced charges under the Arms Act for firing upon a police patrolling party at Bough in Sopore in 2011. Moreover, he orchestrated the killing of police constable Mohammed Shafi Lone in Sopore in the same year. Mattoo was also responsible for an IED blast at the Police Station in Sopore, resulting in the death of SgCt Morifat Hussain in 2011.”
Providing further details, the officer explained that Mattoo initiated a grenade attack on the Police Station of Sopore in collaboration with Ishfaq Kana and Saleem Beig in 2011. He further engaged in an attack on Sopore Police with his associates in 2012, sustaining injuries during the retaliation and now walking with a noticeable limp.
“He played a role in a grenade-throwing incident at the CRPF stationed in the SBI Complex in Hathishah, causing injuries to several civilians. Mattoo was also involved in similar incidents, such as grenade-throwing at the BSNL office in Sopore and at Chankhan Chowk in Sopore,” the officer added.
