Masjid committee told to shut suspected spring water source as precaution
Srinagar, May 03: At least 21 people have tested positive for Hepatitis A virus (HAV) following an outbreak in Khymber area of Zadibal in Srinagar district, officials said on Sunday.
According to officials from District Surveillance Unit (DSU) Srinagar, the outbreak was first reported on April 30 after several cases of Hepatitis A surfaced in Reshipora, Khymber Zone. Initial reports confirmed 18 cases, while three additional cases were detected on May 2, taking the total tally to 21.
The majority of those affected are school-going children aged between 7 and 17 years, officials said, adding that the pattern suggests a common source outbreak.
Contaminated spring water is suspected to be the likely source of infection.
Chief Medical Officer Srinagar, Dr. Tahir Sajad, said that two water samples—one from a tap and another from a spring—along with five blood samples were collected and sent to the District Public Health Laboratory (DPHL) at JLNM Hospital for serological testing and MPN count.
“All five blood samples tested positive for HAV, while the results of water samples are awaited,” he said. The Jal Shakti Department has been informed, and the local masjid committee has been advised to close the suspected spring water source as a precautionary measure.
The CMO said they have launched active surveillance in the affected area and organized a medical camp. “Awareness campaigns focusing on hygiene and safe drinking water practices have also been conducted.
Residents have been advised to boil or chlorinate water before consumption.”
Officials said there has been no rapid increase in new cases, and the situation is currently under control. However, surveillance efforts continue to monitor any further spread.
Health officials have stressed the need to provide safe alternative water sources, ensure regular chlorination and monitoring of water bodies, and maintain strict surveillance.
They said that emphasis has also been laid on improving sanitation and hygiene practices, along with strengthening coordination with the Jal Shakti Department.
Health officials reiterated that laboratory confirmation of the outbreak is underway and urged the public to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.
