Srinagar, Feb 27: The higher reaches of Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district have been experiencing heavy snowfall for the second consecutive day, disrupting normal life and forcing residents indoors.
While the snowfall and rainfall have boosted water levels in rivers, streams, and springs, easing concerns about water shortages caused by the prolonged dry spell earlier this winter, the sudden intensity of snowfall has also raised concerns over avalanches and road blockages.
Ganderbal Administration has issued a high-danger-level avalanche warning for areas above 2,300 meters in Ganderbal, effective from February 27 to February 28. Residents have been advised to remain indoors and avoid venturing into slopes, hilly areas, or avalanche-prone regions until further notice. In case of emergencies, the public has been urged to contact the 24×7 District Control Room at the Mini-Secretariat Ganderbal (DEOC).
The Union Territory of Ladakh has also been impacted by the ongoing weather conditions. Drass, Matayan, Minamarg, Gumri, and Pandrass have witnessed heavy snowfall, with Minamarg and Gumri recording approximately 3 to 4 feet of snow.
The power supply in the Gund area remained disrupted for most of the day before being restored later. Due to the heavy snowfall, residents were confined to their homes, with Sonamarg recording around 1.5 feet of snow, while Gagangeer, Gund, Rayil, and Kullan saw accumulations of 3 to 4 inches.
The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road remained closed for the second consecutive day as Zojila Pass recorded around 3.5 feet of snow, making travel impossible. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will make efforts to restore connectivity once conditions improve.
Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel as weather-related disruptions continue to impact daily life in the region.
