Handwara, Oct 06: In a first-of-its-kind operation, Handwara Police on Monday raided several identified narcotics hotspots across the district in a renewed push against the growing menace of drugs. The raids were conducted under the close supervision of senior officers and targeted locations long suspected of being used for illegal drug trade and abuse. According to officials, multiple areas were searched, and several suspects have been identified for further investigation. The police said the drive was aimed at breaking the local supply chains that have been fueling addiction among youth. SSP Handwara, Mushtaq Choudhary, said the operation marks a decisive step in the district’s fight against drugs. “This is part of a sustained effort to protect our youth. Those found involved in peddling or supporting the drug network will face strict legal action,” he said. Locals have welcomed the crackdown. Mohammad Yousuf, a resident of Handwara town, said, “It was long needed. Drugs have destroyed many young lives here. We hope the police continue such actions.” Another resident, Shazia Begum from Langate, said the growing number of addicts had become a serious concern. “We often see young boys loitering around suspicious spots. This drive gives people hope that things will finally change,” she added. Police have urged the public to cooperate and share information related to drug activity, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential. Officials said similar surprise raids will continue in the coming days as part of a zero-tolerance campaign. “Our goal is clear to make Handwara drug-free,” an officer said. The police have also appealed to parents and community elders to stay alert and guide the youth away from the drug menace. With this first major coordinated crackdown, Handwara Police has signalled a stronger, community-backed war against narcotics in the sub-division.
