Srinagar, Oct 16: Chairman Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister, Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen on Monday expressed serious concern about the ongoing power crisis in Kashmir, saying the people are facing tremendous hardships. He called for immediate action to improve the power situation, especially with the approaching winter season.
In a statement issued here, Hakeem said that frequent unscheduled power cuts, resulting from a severe power shortage, have caused significant inconvenience to the public. He urged the government to take immediate measures to address the power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir.
Yaseen pointed out that given the dry weather conditions prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir for the past several months, authorities should have taken proactive steps to prevent the current power crisis. He said ordinary citizens should not suffer due to power shortages, especially during harsh winters, and the government is duty-bound to provide all necessary facilities to the people.
The PDF chairman lamented over the unprecedented power crisis, saying it is a concerning sign, particularly when people were anticipating improvements in the power supply following the government’s assurances, especially in metered areas. He expressed disappointment that Jammu and Kashmir, with its abundant hydropower generation potential, is facing such a severe power crisis, instead of being self-reliant and power surplus.
Hakeem urged the government to take immediate action to harness the region’s hydroelectric potential to alleviate the ongoing power crisis.
