Budgam, Dec 08: Chairman of Peoples Democratic Front and former minister, Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has expressed concern over the “critical phase” of socio-political uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the prolonged delay in holding Assembly elections has created uncertainty across various sectors of life.
Speaking to delegations from Khansahib and Budgam areas, Hakeem said that the “unknown fear and insecurity” prevailing in the region are unprecedented, a party statement issued here said.
He criticised the “unconstitutional” delay in conducting Assembly elections, asserting that it deprives people of their right to franchise guaranteed by the Constitution. Jammu and Kashmir has not witnessed Assembly elections for the past nine years, which is a violation of constitutional provisions that mandate fair elections every six years, he said.
The PDF chief said that the present “proxy” government is not a substitute for an elected government. The elected representatives are essential for effective governance, he said.
The former minister said that various sectors, including traders, labourers and employees are facing a “severe economic crisis”, which he attributed to the “deliberate avoidance” of Assembly elections for the past nine years.
Despite India being hailed as the world’s largest democracy, the democratic principles are not upheld in Jammu and Kashmir, Yaseen lamented.
According to the statement, the delegations brought forward day-to-day problems, such as power crises, ration shortages, and insufficient medical staff in health centres. Hakeem assured the delegation that he would bring their grievances to the attention of higher authorities for redressal.
