Srinagar, Jan 13: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) chairman Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen on Monday congratulated the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh on the inauguration of the highly anticipated Z-Morh tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The tunnel is expected to significantly boost tourism and bolster the local economy.
In a statement issued here, Hakeem expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for this development, saying the tunnel has potential to facilitate year-round access to Sonamarg, which has historically been impeded by harsh winter conditions. The 6.5-kilometre tunnel will enhance connectivity along the Srinagar-Leh highway and address long-standing transportation challenges in the region, he said.
However, alongside these developmental achievements, the former minister highlighted the importance of addressing the political aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “It would have been better if the Prime Minister had announced the restoration of statehood on the spot,” he said, adding that the prolonged delay in restoring statehood has fostered an environment of frustration and suspicion among the populace.
Yaseen also called for the swift completion of other strategic infrastructure projects, particularly proposed tunnels at Mughal Road, Sinthan Top and Sadhna Top. He stressed the urgency of finishing the ambitious Gulmarg-Tossamaidan-Doodhpathri-Yusmarg-Poonch tourist circuit, which he believes will be a transformative step for the region’s tourism landscape. “This circuit not only promises to enhance tourism and boost economic development but also to promote social interaction among the diverse communities of these areas,” he said.
