Srinagar, Oct 04: A sudden hailstorm, accompanied by strong winds, caused heavy damage to apple orchards and paddy fields in Rafiabad and nearby areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday evening. The storm hit when apple harvesting was at its peak, flattening paddy crops and destroying fruit that was ready for the market. Abdul Hameed Dar, a farmer from the Dangiwacha area of Rafiabad, said that the hailstorm completely ruined our orchards. He said apples that were ready to be sold are lying on the ground, damaged. Many villages, including Rohama, Dangiwacha, Hadipora, and several parts of Sopore. The hailstorm, which lasted around 8-12 minutes, was preceded by dark clouds and strong gusts of wind. Locals said the timing of the storm could not have been worse, as farmers were in the middle of harvesting the late-season apple crop, which brings them the most income. “We had worked hard all year. This destruction is a big setback for us,” said Abdul Rashid, an orchardist from Hadipora. Residents said the storm also damaged rooftops, tin sheds, and fruit boxes kept in orchards. Paddy fields, which were ready for harvest, were flattened by the heavy hail and wind. They appealed to the administration and the Agriculture Department to send teams to assess the losses and provide compensation.
