Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Gulmarg issued a winter advisory on Thursday, providing guidelines for safe and convenient travel on the Gulmarg-Tangmarg Road in anticipation of the upcoming winter season.

In an official order numbered SDM/G/2023/134-143, dated December 21, 2023, the authorities said that in view of upcoming winter, advisories are issued for the safe and convenient traveling on Gulmarg Tangmarg Road.

The official order reads that to prevent accidents and long-lasting traffic jams due to slippery roads which puts the commuters to much inconvenience, only 4×4 vehicles and those with anti-skid chains shall be allowed from Tangmarg to Gulmarg and vice versa till the thawing of the ice from the road.

“To prevent jams and breakdown of vehicles only LMVs with seating capacity not more than 10 seats shall be allowed to ply on Gulmarg Tangmarg Road.”

The order said that only registered Anti-Skid Chain vendors shall be allowed to install chains on vehicles in allocated parking spaces without creating any jam on road, also the rate for anti-skid chains will be Rs 600/- per pair.

All the tour operators and private vehicle owners have been advised not to park their vehicles on the road side.

“The tour operators and private vehicle owners shall park their vehicles only in designated parking spaces available in different spots at Tangmarg.”

The coat and boot vendors have been directed not to come on roads to attract tourists to use their coats and boots to avoid inconvenience to tourists and traffic jamming.

Officials said that these measures are implemented to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers during the winter season.

The advisory aims to prevent accidents, traffic disruptions, and inconvenience to both residents and tourists.

The guidelines will be in effect until further notice from the authorities.
