Srinagar, Mar 19: The higher reaches of Kashmir experienced light snowfall, while the plains witnessed continuous rain on Sunday. Meteorological Department Kashmir has predicted cloudy weather to continue till 23rd March, officials said.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded two inches of a fresh snowfall, Sonamarg two inches, and higher reaches of Gurez, Tulail and Machil 1-2inches of fresh snowfall.
Most parts of Kashmir including Srinagar city received light rain that continued till late evening.
Director Meteorological Centre Kashmir, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that higher reaches received light snowfall in Kashmir and later it decreased towards the evening.
“There has been a significant drop in day temperatures due to inclement weather in the region. The rain may continue till night at some places, especially over higher reaches, with decreased intensity,” he said.
“From 19-22th March there will be partly to generally cloudy with light rain with thunder at scattered places in the region,” Lotus said.
As per MeT data, Srinagar recorded 17.1 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature and 5.5 °C as the minimum temperature. Jammu recorded 26.0 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature and 14.3 °C as the minimum temperature.
Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir settled at 14.4 °C degrees and 1.2 °C as minimum temperatures. Ski-resort Gulmarg recorded 5.0 °C as the maximum temperature and minus 0.4°C as the minimum temperature.
During the past 24 hours, the traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained blocked for 1 hour and 30 minutes due to shooting stones at Mehar-Cafeteria.
“There was a slow movement on National highway due to the breakdown of 04 HMVs between Nashri and NAVYUG Tunnel,” the traffic police spokesman said.
A traffic police spokesman said on Monday, subject to fair weather and road clearance, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.
Similarly, on the Srinagar-Leh road, only one-way traffic (Light Motor Vehicles Goods carrier 04 Chakka ) from Kargil towards Srinagar shall be allowed on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road. These vehicles shall be allowed from Minimarg at 0600 hrs. up to 0830 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut-off timing, the spokesman said.
