Srinagar, Mar 22: Gulmarg Gondola, Asia’s highest and longest cable car projects in Baramulla has generated ₹220 crore revenue during the past two years, government on Saturday said.
In a written response to question raised by MLA Kreeri Irfan Hafiz Lone in the Assembly, the government said that not only the financial success of the project but also its efforts to promote sustainable and eco-friendly tourism across the region.
As per figures, Gulmarg Gondola, one of Asia’s highest and longest cable car projects, earned ₹112.64 Cr in 2022-2023 and ₹110.21 Cr in 2023-2024.
“Currently, there is no formal regulation on the inflow of local people and tourists at various destinations in Jammu and Kashmir. However, to promote sustainable tourism, the Department of Tourism has issued advisories for adventure tour operators and trekkers,” it said adding that advisories include restricting the number of visitors at sensitive sites, imposing fines on violators, banning plastic bags and polythene use, and prohibiting trash burning.
Under the J&K Tourism Policy, 2020, the government emphasizes sustainable tourism by assessing the carrying capacity of destinations.
This policy encourages eco-friendly accommodations such as tented camps and eco-log huts instead of concrete structures. Additionally, Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Solid Waste Management Plants (SWMPs) are being installed in phases to protect environmentally sensitive areas.
To further promote environmental awareness, campaigns like “Travel for Life” and “Tourism for Tomorrow” engage stakeholders and travelers to adopt responsible tourism practices.
“Department also organizes cleanliness drives and Go Green initiatives on key occasions to keep tourist destinations plastic-free.”
Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) has made notable investments under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) component. An amount of ₹108.82 lacs has been invested within the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) jurisdiction for development purposes.
“Furthermore, registered guides and service providers, including ski instructors and snow bikers, benefit from concessional tickets valued at ₹25.00 Cr annually at current ticketing rates,” it said.
The government further said that has highlighted several benefits provided to local stakeholders working in Gulmarg, such as sledge operators, pony walas, tourist guides, ATV drivers, snow bikers, skiers, and photographers.
“Registered tourist guides receive free Gondola rides for Phase 1, while other service providers enjoy concessional tickets and passes at nominal costs. Despite the high tourist demand, the JKCCC continues to accommodate these stakeholders, reflecting a commitment to supporting local livelihoods,” it said.
In response to a query about constructing a new cable car from Baba Reshi to Gulmarg, the government clarified that no such proposal is currently under consideration.
“Tourism Development Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are constituted for a period of two years and are reconstituted as and when required. The government stated that this process continues as per necessity,” it said.
The government further said that there is potential development of Mulabangil Tangmarg, popularly known as “Cherry Valley,” as a tourist destination. While there is no immediate proposal for its development.
